2019 Staff Picks: Favorite music Videos

It’s a rollicking pastiche written by Paul that is a take off on the Chuck Berry song “Back in the U.S.A.” and also parodies the Beach Boys. It’s the first track on the “White Album”—a great, rocking opening number.

Paul wrote it in Rishikesh, India while studying with the Maharishi. Beach Boy Mike Love was there, too, and Love actually suggested the idea for the song to Paul. Mike said over breakfast one morning, “Wouldn’t it be fun to do a Soviet version of ‘Back in the U.S.A.’?”

The Beach Boys and the Beatles always had a friendly rivalry and Paul thought it a great idea to transpose Berry’s patriotism to the U.S.S.R. Paul had fun talking about Soviet women the way the Beach Boys talked about California girls. He also liked putting the names of places like the Ukraine in the song, mentioning balalaikas, and, of course, making the clever allusion to Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia On My Mind.”

Daniel Ness announces EP, shares new track “Notice Me”

When choosing this week’s topic, I neglected to take into account that period, in the early 1970s, when suburban, middle-class music fans keen to impress with their intellectual prowess listened to what is now termed prog rock. We – mostly men – would don greatcoats, grow our hair into greasy bangs and wander around with album covers under our arms in the vain hope girls would marvel at our good taste and braininess in liking Uriah Heep or Gnidrolog.

Many songs of the era – extended and twisted into epics with changes of pace or instrumentation – were nominated and, reluctantly at first, a list slanted towards the genre began to form.

I spent a couple of months last year studying bluegrass in North Carolina, and I learned that there are is one tune you never ask a banjo player to play for you. Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Earl Scruggs’s most famous instrumental, is a tune so familiar, so oft-played, that even suggesting it at a jam will mark you out as an idiot know-nothing newcomer. It’s the equivalent of self-identifying as a Trekkie, when the correct term is Trekker.
